In the same way, “Vimy Ridge” wouldn’t be any less of a hard-riffing mid-tempo melodeath song if it wasn’t a tribute to the decorated Ukrainian-Canadian soldier Filip Konowal. More than its grisled portrayal of the New York National Guard regiment known as the Harlem Hellfighters, “Don't Tread on Me” paves a distinct path from machine-gun blasts to mortar shell doom metal with Dissection -ish leads. Where Fear and Weapons Meet fleshes out 1914 ’s approach without becoming gimmicky. The symphonic overtones synthesize naturally with the grim tremolo picking and powerful gutturals, as the lyrics delve into the thoughts of Ditmar Kumarberg as he assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand and kicked the Great War off. Blaring brass crescendos augment the song's melodies, while Rostyslav Potoplyak's drums reach a level of unrelenting intensity yet-unheard from the band. Then there’s Siege Mode, which makes this already-devastating weapon somehow even stronger with the ability to penetrate targets and the addition of area-of-effect damage. One upgrade option is called Precision Bolt, which essentially turns the Gauss Cannon into a sniper rifle – one that, at maximum upgrade level, causes enemies to explode and damage other nearby enemies. This portable railgun does massive amounts of damage in its default configuration, sure, but it’s the available upgrades that really put this beast over the top. The Gauss CannonĭOOM (2016) introduced a whole lineup of new weapons to the DOOM arsenal, but it’s hard to top the addition of the Gauss Cannon.

While we eagerly await spending time with DOOM Eternal’s dramatically expanded arsenal of weapons (just take a look at footage of the DOOM Blade and Equipment Launcher for an idea of what to expect in future versions of this list), let’s look back at the best weapons the series has given us so far.
